The Sikkim@50 Golden Jubilee Conclave held in Gangtok was a momentous occasion, marking half a century of the state's journey as a part of India. The event, hosted by the Press Club of Sikkim and the Department of Information and Public Relations (IPR), witnessed the presence of dignitaries, including the Governor of Sikkim, Om Prakash Mathur, Member of the Lok Sabha Indra Hang Subba and several other distinguished speakers.
Governor Mathur, in his address spoke on the remarkable transformation Sikkim has undergone since its merger with India in 1975. He said that there is an importance of celebrating the state's identity and progress while acknowledging the challenges ahead. “In the last five decades, Sikkim has successfully joined the Indian Union and has made its unique identity. It is essential for us to continue strengthening this identity as we move forward,” said Governor Mathur. He further encouraged everyone present to actively engage in discussions that would help identify areas of improvement for the state’s development.
One of the key issues highlighted by the Governor was the growing concern over drug abuse in the state. Governor Mathur urged journalists and the public to continue raising awareness on this pressing issue, which has emerged as a major challenge in recent years. “We need to work together to tackle the drug menace and ensure that Sikkim's progress is not marred by such social issues,” he added.
Governor Mathur also spoke on the importance of enhancing tourism infrastructure, specifically the development of an airport to cater to the increasing number of visitors. “I have spoken to the minister about the airport, and we must focus on building it in a strategic area that will ease the travel experience for tourists,” he said.
A significant portion of his speech also focused on environmental conservation, which is close to the hearts of Sikkim’s residents. The Governor praised the state's unique environmental policies, particularly the initiative to plant 180 trees whenever a child is born. “When I talk about Sikkim’s environmental achievements in other states, people are amazed. These kinds of policies, backed by strong willpower, set Sikkim apart,” Governor Mathur said.
The Golden Jubilee Conclave also provided a platform for the exchange of ideas, with several speakers from outside the state sharing their views on Sikkim’s role at the national level. They stressed the importance of recognizing Sikkim as a key player in India’s development, especially in areas such as ecology, culture, and sustainable tourism.
In addition to his remarks on state development, Governor Mathur also expressed pride in the nation's security measures, citing the success of "Operation Sindoor" in Pahalgam, which was carried out to dismantle terrorist launchpads across the border. “We have demonstrated our resolve to protect the nation and its citizens. India will not bow to external pressures,” he declared. The Governor also mentioned the Prime Minister’s statement, which confirmed the success of the operation and reaffirmed India’s commitment to national security.
