Member of Parliament from Sikkim, Indra Hang Subba participated in the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Consumer Affairs, Food, and Public Distribution’s study visit to Mumbai and Goa from January 21 to 24. Chaired by Kanimozhi Karunanidhi, the visit focused on consumer rights in banking, the public distribution system (PDS), and food grain transportation.
On January 23, the committee engaged with senior officials from the Department of Consumer Affairs, Department of Financial Services, and leading banks, including State Bank of India, Punjab National Bank, UCO Bank, Bank of Baroda, and Central Bank of India. Discussions centered on “Safeguarding Consumer Rights in the Banking Sector,” addressing challenges specific to the Western Region.
Shri Subba underscored the importance of enhancing transparency, ensuring accessibility, and safeguarding consumer interests. His proactive approach reflected his commitment to strengthening the financial sector's consumer focus.
Visit to Goa’s Food Storage Depot
The same day, the committee inspected the Food Storage Depot (FSD) managed by the Food Corporation of India (FCI) in Goa. Shri Subba praised the depot's efficient storage practices and robust record-keeping systems. He highlighted the depot’s vital role in maintaining food security by ensuring timely distribution of grains.

On January 24, the committee held discussions with representatives from FCI, Central Warehousing Corporation (CWC), and Konkan Railways. The session focused on optimizing food grain transportation through railways, particularly in Goa.
Subba stated the need for better coordination between railways and storage facilities to minimize delays and reduce wastage. He also advocated for innovative logistical solutions to address the unique challenges faced by regions like Sikkim, which lack direct railway connectivity.
