Sikkim MP advocates for robust food security in challenging terrain

Sikkim Lok Sabha MP Indra Hang Subba on June 10 participated in a significant session of the Standing Committee on Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution. The crucial meeting, convened in the nation's capital, New Delhi, was presided over by the MP and Chairperson of the Committee, Kanimozhi Karunanidhi.

The agenda for the day’s discussions encompassed several critical facets of the country’s food distribution framework. Key topics deliberated upon included the comprehensive process of procurement and subsequent distribution of essential food grains, the intricate mechanisms governing supply to various consumer states across the nation, and the paramount importance of advanced storage solutions and modern technologies for the effective preservation of food grains.

During the proceedings, Subba seized the opportunity to meticulously articulate state-specific challenges pertinent to Sikkim. His interventions particularly focused on the complexities associated with the storage, transportation, and consistent supply of quality food grains to beneficiaries under the Public Distribution System (PDS) within the unique geographical context of his constituency.

A significant point of emphasis for the Sikkim MP was the pressing requirement for enhanced buffer storage infrastructure within the state. He cogently linked this necessity to the escalating frequency of natural calamities, such as flash floods, which have increasingly impacted the Himalayan region. Shri Subba earnestly urged the relevant government departments to diligently explore and adopt modern, climate-resilient storage technologies specifically engineered to withstand the demanding conditions prevalent in mountainous terrains.

Subba extended his acknowledgment to the committee for its dedicated efforts. He also unequivocally reaffirmed his steadfast commitment to fostering collaborative engagement with all involved stakeholders. This collaborative approach, he stressed, is fundamental to collectively ensuring robust food security and upholding consumer welfare not only in Sikkim but across the entire nation.
