The Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) Party has welcomed the recent announcement by the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India, regarding the conduct of the next Population Census of India, scheduled for 2027. The notification was issued through Gazette Notification No. S.O. 2681(E) dated June 16, 2025.

In an official statement issued on Tuesday, SKM spokesperson Bikash Basnet expressed strong support for the decision, calling it a timely and important step for the nation’s future. The party believes that the Census is not just a count of people, but a detailed and crucial exercise that helps the government understand the needs of the population, plan policies, and distribute welfare schemes properly.

Describing the move as “historic,” SKM credited the dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi for taking forward such a critical national task. “This shows the Central Government’s focus on accurate data, better planning, and inclusive governance,” said the statement.

The party also shared that the SKM, under the leadership of its president and the Chief Minister of Sikkim, Shri Prem Singh Tamang (Golay), will give full cooperation to the Census authorities. The statement mentioned that every step will be taken to ensure that all people in Sikkim are counted properly and fairly in the upcoming 2027 Census.

The SKM said it believes that a successful Census will help in the better delivery of schemes, development of infrastructure, and overall growth of the state. It also urged the people of Sikkim to cooperate fully when the Census teams come to collect information.

“Each citizen's participation is important. The data that will be collected in the Census will shape the roadmap for our future. It will help bring better roads, schools, hospitals, and other essential services to our villages and towns,” the party said.

The SKM further stressed that the information collected will help identify gaps in development and ensure that no one is left behind. With Sikkim’s diverse population spread across urban, rural, and remote hilly areas, the party emphasized the need for accurate representation.

In the coming days, the party plans to raise public awareness through meetings, local campaigns, and interactions with village leaders so that people understand why the Census is important and how they can help. SKM also assured that it would assist the local administration and officials involved in the census process in all possible ways.

The 2027 Census will be the first full population enumeration in India after the 2011 Census, as the one scheduled in 2021 was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The new exercise is expected to gather not just demographic data but also updated information on housing, education, employment, and access to basic services.
