Sikkim: Jorethang hosts historic badminton championship with record participation

The 9th Jorethang Badminton Open Championship 2025 has set a new benchmark for sports in Sikkim, attracting an unprecedented 389 participants from across the region. Players from Sikkim, Nepal, Assam, Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Kurseong and Siliguri have gathered for this highly anticipated event, making it a historic milestone in Jorethang’s sporting calendar.
The tournament, which began on January 23, will run until January 26 and has already captured the hearts of players and spectators alike. A total of 221 junior players are competing in various categories, including Boys and Girls Under-11 to Under-19. Adding to the excitement, veteran players are showcasing their skills in the Men’s Doubles category for the 35+ to 50+ age group.
With a total cash prize of ₹2.5 lakh, the winners and runners-up will be awarded trophies and cash prizes. The trophies have been generously sponsored by Hon’ble Area MLA Shri Madan Cinturi, while IPCA Jorethang and NTPC Rambang have co-sponsored the event. The organizers also expressed deep gratitude to Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang for his financial support, which made this grand event possible.
The second day of the championship witnessed the presence of Deputy Speaker Rajkumari Thapa, whose attendance added prestige and inspiration to the tournament. Her encouraging words energized both participants and the audience.
The semi-finals and finals, scheduled for January 25 and 26, promise intense competition and thrilling matches.
