In a historic moment for Sikkim, the ceremonial flag-off for the much-awaited 1st Mountain Rush TSD Rally cum Auto Show by JK Tyres took place today, April 22, at the Burtuk Helipad. This marks the beginning of the state’s first-ever car rally, which promises to bring motorsports and tourism to the forefront as part of the celebrations for Sikkim's 50th statehood anniversary.
The rally, set to officially commence on April 23 from Ridge Park in Gangtok, is a groundbreaking event for the state. Organised by the Federation of Motor Sports Clubs of India (FMSCI), the Mountain Rush rally will follow the Time, Speed, Distance (TSD) format. The event has already attracted an impressive lineup of national champions, making it one of the largest gatherings of top-tier motorsport talent in a single rally event.
Yougan Tamang, press secretary to Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang, expressed excitement about the event’s potential to boost Sikkim’s tourism. “This rally holds great potential to promote tourism in the state. Sikkim’s terrain is ideal for motorsports,” Tamang said. The rally will not only showcase the region’s natural beauty but also highlight its growing reputation as a motorsport destination.
The multi-day rally will span all six districts of Sikkim, covering key locations such as Lachung, Ravangla, Soreng, Namchi, and Pakyong before looping back to Gangtok. Designed to challenge the participants, the route also provides a unique opportunity to explore the state’s stunning landscapes, promoting rural tourism alongside the thrill of the competition.
Sikkim, which became India’s 22nd state in 1975, has long been known for its mountainous terrain, and this rally presents a chance to put the state on the motorsport map. The involvement of FMSCI ensures that the event adheres to national racing standards, ensuring a high level of competition and excitement.
