Sikkim hosts 1st Open International Taekwondo Championship-2025 in Namchi
In the Poomsae Overall Championship Trophy, Grace Academy secured first place with 5 gold and 1 silver medal, while Sanjay Taekwondo claimed second place with 3 gold, 4 silver, and 3 bronze medals.

The three-day-long 1st Open International Taekwondo Championship-2025, held at the Indoor Stadium in Namchi, concluded successfully today. Organized by the Namchi District Taekwondo Association under the aegis of the Sikkim Amateur Taekwondo Association, the championship witnessed participation from twelve teams across the country, with approximately 300 individual athletes showcasing their skills.
The closing ceremony was graced by Anupa Tamling, Deputy Commissioner of Namchi, as the Chief Guest and Satish Chandra Rai, MLA and Chief Patron as the Guest of Honour. Other dignitaries included Sabitri Tamang, Vice-Chairperson of NMC, Pem Norbu Bhutia, Councillor of NMC, patrons of the organizing committee and an enthusiastic crowd of spectators.
In her address, Tamling highlighted that Taekwondo is not merely a sport but a platform that fosters resilience, discipline, confidence, and personal growth. She encouraged participants to maintain their sporting spirit, emphasizing that every athlete is a champion, regardless of winning or losing.
The championship featured two main categories: Sub-Junior/Junior, classified by weight, and Cadet, organized based on height. The event also showcased intense competition and outstanding performances across the board.
In the Poomsae Overall Championship Trophy, Grace Academy secured first place with 5 gold and 1 silver medal, while Sanjay Taekwondo claimed second place with 3 gold, 4 silver, and 3 bronze medals.
For the Kyorugi Overall Championship Trophy, the Namchi District Taekwondo Association dominated the competition, bagging 33 gold, 20 silver, and 10 bronze medals, clinching the first position. Assam took the second spot with 6 gold, 3 silver, and 5 bronze medals.
Moreover, the Manipur team was recognized for their exemplary conduct and awarded the Best Discipline Team title.
