The Sikkim State High-Level Committee convened its third crucial meeting on March 18 and 19, 2025, at the Anthropological Survey of India (ANSI) Conference Room in Kolkata. The meeting focused on conducting a structured counterpart review of draft ethnographic reports, aiming to secure tribal recognition for 12 caste communities.
This high-level discussion underscores the commitment of Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang and the SKM government in addressing the long-pending demand for tribal status for these communities. The state government has adopted a research-driven and evidence-based approach to ensure that the inclusion process is clear, comprehensive, and compelling.
The meeting was chaired by committee chairman Prof. B.V. Sharma, with participation from Vice Chairman Prof. Mahendra P. Lama, MLA and Advisor B.S. Panth, senior committee members, and officials from the Social Welfare Department. The primary goal of the discussions was to enhance the credibility of the reports through a meticulous review process, ensuring authenticity and accuracy.
Reports were prepared in close collaboration with community members and research assistants, with a focus on improving structural aspects and incorporating additional statistical data. A well-structured review strategy was implemented, dividing committee members into three sub-groups to ensure a thorough examination of the findings.
One of the key aspects of the process was direct engagement with community representatives. On the second day, a virtual meeting was held with members of the 12 caste groups, allowing them to provide further insights and clarify any concerns. This participatory approach ensured that the voices, traditions, and lived experiences of these communities remained central to the final report.
The final meeting of the committee is scheduled to take place in Gangtok, where the refined reports will be reviewed and submitted.
