Sikkim's Minister for Health and Family Welfare G.T. Dhungel, held a high-level meeting with Dr. Rajiv Bahl, Union Secretary and Director General of the Department of Health and Research, ICMR, and Ms. Richa Khoda, Joint Secretary of the same department, in New Delhi.

Dhungel was accompanied by Tshewang Gyatso, Secretary of the Sikkim Health Department, during the meeting. The discussions primarily revolved around opportunities for collaboration in medical research and the potential to harness the Indian Council of Medical Research’s (ICMR) vast scientific knowledge and technical expertise for Sikkim’s benefit.

“The meeting was a meaningful step forward in our vision to strengthen Sikkim’s healthcare landscape through research-driven strategies and institutional partnerships,” said Minister Dhungel in a public statement. He further acknowledged the support and commitment shown by Dr. Bahl and Ms. Khoda, noting their positive engagement in the dialogue.

The interaction touched on a variety of areas where Sikkim could work closely with ICMR, including disease surveillance, public health studies, advanced laboratory support, and capacity-building programs for local health professionals. Shri Dhungel emphasized that these collaborations would not only improve healthcare services in the state but also promote long-term research capabilities.

Sikkim, known for its challenging terrain and geographically dispersed population, faces unique public health issues. Access to quality healthcare and modern diagnostic facilities remains a concern in some remote areas. Strengthening the state’s medical research ecosystem with support from ICMR could bring timely solutions to these challenges by enabling evidence-based health policy, better disease prevention strategies, and data-driven interventions.

“This meeting marks a vital moment in our ongoing efforts to develop a robust healthcare system for Sikkim. We look forward to a fruitful collaboration that can bridge knowledge gaps and improve outcomes for our citizens,” Dhungel added.
