Governor of Sikkim, Om Prakash Mathur, arrived in Gyalshing District on Tuesday for a two-day official visit aimed at assessing developmental initiatives and engaging with local stakeholders.
The Governor commenced his maiden visit with a grand Guard of Honour at Zilla Bhawan, Kyongsa. He was welcomed by Zilla Adhakshya D.S. Limboo, District Collector Tenzing D. Denzongpa, Superintendent of Police Tshering Sherpa, Zilla Upa-Adhakshya Anita Rai, ADC HQ Rajani Sharma, ADC Gyalshing Suresh Rai, SDM HQ Pulkit (IAS), SDM Gyalshing Sandesh Subba, ASP S.W. Bhutia, and officials from various departments.
Governor Mathur engaged in discussions with department heads, Panchayati Raj representatives, self-help groups, and NGOs, underlining his commitment to strengthening governance at the grassroots level. The event opened with the National Anthem, followed by a ceremonial welcome where the District Collector and Superintendent of Police presented him with flower bouquets and silk scarves.
In his welcome address, SDM HQ Pulkit highlighted the significance of the visit, expressing optimism about its impact on the district’s development. District Collector Tenzing D. Denzongpa then provided a detailed presentation on Gyalshing’s geographical and economic landscape, showcasing its natural treasures, including the UNESCO-listed Khangchendzonga National Park, Ramsar-recognized Khecheopalri Lake, and historical sites. While acknowledging the district’s geographical challenges, he emphasized its immense potential for sustainable growth.
During his address, Governor Mathur commended the district administration’s efforts and stressed that regional development is integral to the nation’s progress. He emphasized the need for effective implementation of government schemes to ensure access to healthcare, education, clean drinking water, and sanitation, even in the most remote areas.

Additionally, he urged departments to adopt innovative, people-centric approaches to development, particularly in the utilization of forest resources for local livelihoods.
Reiterating the vision of "Pradesh bhi Viksit, Desh bhi Viksit," the Governor acknowledged India’s strides towards becoming a global economic power and called for a bottom-up approach to public welfare schemes to empower marginalized communities. Expressing concern over the rising cases of suicide and substance abuse in the region, he urged collaborative intervention strategies to address these social issues.
