A two-day joint field visit to landslide-affected areas under the Daramdin Constituency came to an end today. The visit was led by officials from the Sikkim State Disaster Management Authority (SSDMA), along with the Land Revenue and Disaster Management Department (LR&DMD) and the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA). The purpose of the visit was to assess the damage caused by recent landslides and to plan necessary safety and recovery measures.
On the second and final day, the team visited several villages including Okhrey, Ghantidara, Pureytar, and Changbagaon. These areas have been hit by different types of landslides — some small, some large. In many places, roads have been cut off, farmland has been damaged, and nearby houses and infrastructure remain at risk. The team carefully examined each site to understand the severity of the problem.
After that, the team moved to Bhareng and Ribdi to continue their assessment. These visits were important to find out whether people in these areas need immediate help or if long-term action is required. The officials interacted with the local community, listened to their concerns, and noted their feedback for future planning.
The last stop of the visit was Moonew village. Here, the team carried out a more detailed study. They looked at the ground condition, observed the cracks and soil movement, and noted that precautionary steps must be taken as soon as possible. They also agreed that the support of multiple government departments would be needed to carry out proper restoration work.
During the visit, the team also came across a fresh landslide that had occurred just past midnight at Sombarey. Though the damage was not very severe, the slide had partially blocked the road and created danger for a nearby house. The team immediately decided to offer extra help to restore the road and reduce the risk to the household.
Throughout the two days, the officials worked closely with the people in each area. They shared safety tips, promised regular monitoring, and assured villagers that the government is committed to helping them recover. Many local people also thanked the officials for coming to see the situation firsthand and listening to their problems.
Those present during the visit included Special Secretary-cum-Director of SSDMA Mr. Prabhakar Rai, Additional Director of SSDMA Mr. Rajiv Roka, Additional District Collector (I) Mr. D. R. Bista, Sub-Divisional Magistrate (HQ) Mr. Prem K. Subba, District Project Officer (DDMA) Mrs. Rajni Pega, Block Development Officer (Daramdin) Mr. Ongdi Sherpa, Assistant Engineer (BAC, Daramdin) Mr. Samir Sharma, Human Resources Officer (SSDMA) Mr. Kunsang Namgyal, Junior Engineer (BAC) Mr. Prabhakar Rai, along with members of LR&DMD, DDMA, Panchayat members from the affected areas, and local residents.
