To promote women’s comfort, hygiene and empowerment, the Women, Child, Senior Citizen, and Divyangjan Welfare Department of the Government of Sikkim has introduced a new initiative to support women and mothers. The initiative has been launched on the occasion of International Women’s Day, making it a meaningful step towards gender-friendly infrastructure in the state.
As part of this initiative, the department has set up a permanent Breastfeeding Pods Center and a dedicated Women’s Toilet with a Sanitary Napkin Vending Machine at Saramsa Garden. These facilities are aimed at providing a safe, private and hygienic space for nursing mothers and women, ensuring that they have access to essential amenities for their well-being.
According to Normit Lepcha, PD cum Secretary of the Women, Child, Senior Citizen, and Divyangjan Welfare Department, this initiative is just the beginning. In the coming days, similar breastfeeding pods and vending machines will be installed across all districts of Sikkim to ensure that women in different parts of the state can benefit from these facilities.
The newly established Breastfeeding Pods Center will offer a secure and private environment for mothers to breastfeed their babies in public places, addressing a long-standing need for better infrastructure for nursing mothers. Additionally, the installation of sanitary napkin vending machines in the women’s toilet is expected to significantly improve menstrual hygiene and accessibility to essential sanitary products for women visiting Saramsa Garden.
This initiative aligns with the government’s commitment to empowering women, ensuring their dignity, and promoting hygiene and safety in public spaces. Such steps are expected to set an example for other states to adopt similar gender-inclusive facilities.
Meanwhile, the state is gearing up for a grand celebration of International Women’s Day at Saramsa Garden tomorrow. The event is expected to witness participation from various dignitaries, social organizations, and women from different walks of life.
