The Government of Sikkim has introduced the Sikkim Model Schools Bill, 2025 in a bid to establish government-aided schools that will set new benchmarks for educational excellence. The Bill outlines the creation of the Sikkim Model Schools, a series of institutions designed to provide high-quality, innovative education while acting as role models for other schools in the state to emulate.
The Sikkim Model Schools aim to offer a holistic and flexible learning environment that fosters the development of each student's unique abilities. These schools will prioritize academic and non-academic growth, encourage critical thinking, and emphasize conceptual understanding over rote learning. The Bill outlines the creation of a Sikkim Model School Board, a body corporate that will manage the overall functioning of these institutions.
The model schools will focus on removing rigid distinctions between academic and vocational streams and integrating diverse disciplines, including sciences, arts, humanities, and sports. They will emphasize creativity, innovation, and ethics, nurturing values such as empathy, respect, and responsibility. Moreover, multilingualism will be promoted, and students will be empowered to choose their learning paths based on their individual talents and interests.
In line with the state's vision for inclusive and progressive education, the Bill seeks to establish a dynamic system where students are not only academically prepared but also socially responsible and globally aware. The Sikkim Model Schools Act, 2025 will come into force immediately upon approval by the Sikkim Legislature.
