Sikkim government cracks down on employee laxity with surprise inspections
The Department of Personnel (DOP) has reiterated that the official working hours for government offices in Sikkim are from 10:00 AM to 4:30 PM, and all officers and staff must report to duty on time.

The Government of Sikkim has taken strict action against employees found neglecting their official duties following a surprise inspection conducted on March 24, 2025. The inspection, carried out in select head offices and district offices, revealed that 51 employees reported late for duty, while 147 were on unauthorized leave. As per official reports, punitive measures have already been initiated against these employees as per government rules.
The Department of Personnel (DOP) has reiterated that the official working hours for government offices in Sikkim are from 10:00 AM to 4:30 PM, and all officers and staff must report to duty on time. To ensure strict discipline, Heads of Departments (HoDs) and Heads of Offices (HoOs) have been directed to conduct monthly surprise inspections to monitor attendance and punctuality. These reports must be submitted regularly to the Chief Secretary's office for further review.
The circular issued by Rinzing Chewang Bhutia, Secretary to the Government, warns that stringent disciplinary action will be taken against employees who fail to maintain punctuality. Moreover, district officers have been reminded that they must seek prior approval from the respective District Collector before leaving their station, in line with the existing government orders.
