A high-level security and preparedness meeting was held today at Samman Bhawan in Gangtok, with Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang (Golay) leading discussions aimed at reviewing the State’s readiness in the face of any potential crisis. The meeting comes amid growing concerns over security and emergency management, given Sikkim’s strategic position near international borders.
The Chief Minister was joined by top officials, including Political Secretary Jacob Khaling, Cabinet Secretary V.B. Pathak, Chief Secretary R. Telang, Director General of Police Akshay Sachdeva and heads of several departments. District Collectors (DCs) and Superintendents of Police (SPs) from all six districts also participated in the meeting.

The Power Department has been directed to carry out routine emergency drills, especially for blackout situations. They have also been asked to run awareness drives to inform the public on how to respond during power outages. Quick response systems must be in place at all times, the Chief Minister instructed.
The Roads & Bridges Department has been told to make sure all major roads and bridges remain in good condition. This is crucial for the movement of emergency services, defence logistics, and daily supplies. The Chief Minister said the department must carry out regular inspections of important roads and bridges and make immediate repairs where needed.
In view of possible health emergencies, the Health Department has been put on high alert. All government hospitals have been asked to be fully prepared with enough medical staff, medicine, equipment, and ambulance services. Leave for medical personnel in essential services has been restricted, except for maternity leave.
The Food & Civil Supplies Department has been directed to stock up on ration, diesel, petrol, and all essential items. The Chief Minister stressed that the supply chain must not be disrupted and asked the department to monitor key depots closely.
The Sikkim Police, along with the Indian Reserve Battalion (IRB) and Sikkim Armed Police (SAP), have been instructed to increase patrolling and keep a watchful eye, especially at the border check-posts. Law enforcement agencies have been asked to conduct mock drills and flag marches regularly to show presence and keep law and order intact.
The Land Revenue and Disaster Management Department was told to install sirens and public warning systems across all districts and major towns. These systems must meet national technical standards. The department has also been directed to deploy trained disaster supervisors in the event of any emergency. These personnel will support ground-level relief and coordination work.
Through the meeting , the Chief Minister reassured the public that the government is fully alert and prepared. He said all departments have been instructed to stay ready and work together in any emergency.
“These efforts are part of a larger strategy to safeguard the peace, integrity, and territorial sanctity of Sikkim. Our State’s strategic location means we must always be prepared. I urge all citizens to stay calm and be responsible. Please cooperate with the administration and security forces,” said Chief Minister Tamang.
He also advised people not to trust or spread rumours or unverified news on social media that may create panic. The Chief Minister said the government’s aim is to maintain public peace, safety, and national security. He promised that the State administration will continue working hard to keep Sikkim safe and stable.
