The Sikkim Forest and Environment Department, in collaboration with the Global Tiger Forum (GTF), distributed token allotment letters for greenhouse construction, fencing repairs, and ex-gratia/relief payments to communities affected by human-wildlife conflicts in areas under the Pangolakha Wildlife Sanctuary.
The initiative, part of the "Investigating and Addressing Tiger Conservation in Sikkim – Eastern Himalayas" project under the IUCN-KfW-supported Integrated Tiger Habitat Conservation Programme (ITHCP), seeks to promote coexistence and ecological balance amid rising conflicts due to increased forest cover and strengthened biodiversity.
MP Dr. Indra Hang Subba presided over the event during the Blue Duke Festival at Saramsa Garden, alongside Forest Department officials and GTF representatives.
Five allotment letters for greenhouse construction were handed over to areas with frequent human-wildlife conflicts, including Dalapchand, Regu Dara, Dockin, Premlakha, and Singaneybas. Additionally, certificates for fencing repair materials were distributed to Singaneybas and South Regu. These greenhouses aim to support farmers by protecting their crops from wildlife incursions, while fencing repairs are expected to reduce wildlife entry into human settlements.
Enhanced ex-gratia and relief payments were also issued to ensure timely financial assistance for those affected by wildlife interactions.
