Sikkim Health Minister G.T. Dhungelon December 21 attended the Pre-Budget and GST Council meeting under the directives of Hon’ble Chief Minister. The high-level discussions, chaired by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, included Finance Ministers from all Indian states and took place on December 20 and 21 in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan.
The meeting provided a platform for states to share their financial concerns and policy priorities ahead of the Union Budget 2024-25. Dhungel spoke on Sikkim’s unique challenges, particularly those arising from frequent natural calamities. "The discussions with the Union Finance Minister were fruitful, with Sikkim being a focal point for its vulnerabilities to natural disasters," said Dhungel.
He highlighted the urgent need for central assistance to mitigate the impacts of landslides, floods and other calamities that significantly disrupt life and infrastructure in the Himalayan state.
The Pre-Budget session also focused on refining GST policies to ensure equitable distribution of resources and revenue optimization. Sikkim’s concerns were aligned with broader discussions about sustainable growth, regional equity, and disaster preparedness.
The Minister expressed gratitude to the Union Government for its attention to Sikkim’s challenges and assured that the state remains committed to efficient fiscal management and disaster challenges.
