Sikkim: Elderly man dies in Gangtok hotel; investigation underway

A 65-year-old man identified as Junga Sarki, a resident of Jumla, Nepal, currently residing in Lingding, Gangtok, was found dead under mysterious circumstances at a hotel in Deorali. The Sadar Police Station has registered a case under the BNSS Act, and investigations are ongoing.

According to the FIR filed by Suraj Lama, 44, the owner of Le Sherpa Hotel, the incident occurred on December 27 at approximately 2:30 PM. Sarki reportedly entered the hotel and consumed a peg of alcohol. Moments later, he lost consciousness and collapsed to the floor.

Efforts were made to revive him by moving him outside for fresh air but he was pronounced dead on the spot. The body was subsequently transported to the STNM Hospital mortuary, where it has been preserved for legal and medical formalities.

The Sadar Police Station registered the case as UD Case FIR No. 110/2024 under Section 194 of the BNSS Act, 2023. The investigation has been assigned to Assistant Sub-Inspector Ugen Bhutia.

In connection with the case, three individuals have been detained under Sections 35 and 170 of the BNSS Act for questioning. The police are examining CCTV footage and other evidence to determine the exact cause of death.
