A group of drivers submitted a memorandum at Transport Bhawan in Gangtok, demanding the removal of the AI system and a reduction in vehicle-related taxes in the state.
One of the representatives of the protesting drivers said, "We met the Principal Chief Advisor (PCA) and submitted our memorandum. He told us that he needs some time. Our main demand today is that the AI-generated backdated entries should be removed and not compromised."
He further said, "We spoke to him, and he has asked for a few days. We have come here prepared to stay on the road if necessary because this is for the welfare of Sikkim. We are not here to make anyone a leader or a hero, but the people of Sikkim have suffered a lot."
The drivers raised concerns over multiple issues, including road permits and legal procedures for vehicles. "The amount of money that the government has imposed as tax has gone up to Rs 25,000. That is why we came to meet the Secretary, but we could not meet him today. Through the media, we want to appeal to the Hon'ble Chief Minister, who is also the Transport Minister. He should stay in Sikkim for a few days and address this issue."
Regarding the AI system, they questioned its implementation without proper infrastructure. "If AI is to be implemented, the roads should be developed accordingly. AI is used in foreign countries, but those countries have advanced far ahead, whereas Sikkim's condition is completely different. We are not against AI, but it should be implemented properly."
Citing an example of irregularities, a driver said, "A car was scrapped in 2022, and the license plate was surrendered. However, the same number is still active in the system. This is a serious issue. There are thousands of vehicles on the road with similar problems, and we have proof. The transport department needs to take responsibility and resolve this."
The protestors demanded an immediate halt to the AI system in Sikkim. "If AI continues, it should function smoothly without causing trouble for drivers. We have given the authorities time to discuss, but if similar issues arise in the future, we will not hesitate to protest again."
Speaking about their right to raise concerns, one of the representatives said, "We are not protesting against the government but against a faulty system. Wherever there is wrongdoing, we have the right to speak up. However, in Sikkim, people are afraid to raise their voices. They send us photos and videos of issues but remain silent. We, the people of Kanchan Sikkim, are here to demand justice."
The drivers are now waiting for the government's response to their demands.
