Citizen Action Party (CAP) chief Ganesh Rai launched a scathing attack on the Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) government during the party’s third foundation day celebration in Rangpo. Rai criticized the government’s handling of the controversial Sikkim-Darjeeling merger issue, calling it a matter of grave constitutional concern.
Rai alleged that the SKM government, led by Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang, has not taken the merger issue seriously. “The Chief Minister claims this is not a serious issue and that Sikkim is protected under Article 371F. But the reality is that 371F can be amended, and any change to it would not be unconstitutional,” he said.
Rai spoke about the historical context of Sikkim’s integration into India, recalling the 1974 Sikkim Government Act and the subsequent resolution by the Sikkim Assembly to merge with India as its 22nd state. He highlighted that while 371F was intended to safeguard Sikkim’s identity, recent developments have left the state vulnerable to political manipulation.
The CAP chief accused the SKM government of creating a fertile ground for the proposed merger with Darjeeling. “Why does the Chief Minister frequently visit Darjeeling and Kalimpong? Why are his photos plastered across these regions? People in Darjeeling now openly talk about merging with Sikkim,” Rai remarked.
Rai also pointed fingers at Mahendra P. Lama, alleging his involvement in a conspiracy to weaken Sikkim’s autonomy. “Under his direction, financial and legislative changes are being made that undermine Sikkim’s unique status. Even the Finance Bill has been altered to dilute Sikkim’s rights,” he said.
He further criticized the SKM government’s push for tribal status for 12 communities, stating that official documents are being manipulated to redefine Sikkimese identities. “The SKM government is betraying the people of Sikkim by working in association with the central government to erode our distinct identity,” Rai said.
The CAP chief reiterated the importance of citizens’ involvement in safeguarding Sikkim. “We named our party Citizen Action Party because we believe that protecting Sikkim is a collective responsibility. We must stand united against threats to our state’s future,” he said.
Rai expressed concern over the central government’s perceived apprehension about Sikkim’s administration. “If Sikkim fails to protect itself, it will harm not just the state but also the center. This is why citizens must act now,” he said.
