Sikkim CM: Reopening Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, boosting tourism key to regional growth

Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang on December 21 participated in the 72nd Plenary Meeting of the North Eastern Council (NEC) chaired by Union Home Minister Amit Shah. During the event, held in Agartala, the Chief Minister raised several critical issues concerning Sikkim while expressing gratitude for the Central Government's consistent support and guidance.

In his address, Tamang highlighted the Union Budget 2024-25 as a cornerstone for achieving the vision of "Viksit Bharat-2047." He called for collective efforts to ensure sustainable development across the northeastern region. Stressing the pivotal role of tourism and MSMEs in Sikkim’s economy, he appealed for robust support to enhance tourism infrastructure and promote entrepreneurship.

The Chief Minister proposed a pilot project under the NEC to boost eco-tourism and entrepreneurship, citing successful initiatives in Sikkim as examples. He urged the reopening of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra through Sikkim and emphasized the importance of establishing an Integrated Check Post and a Multimodal Corridor at Chiwa Bhanjyang on the Nepal border to enhance regional connectivity and trade.

Addressing the impact of the Teesta floods, Tamang demanded immediate action to resolve disruptions along NH10 and address river silting in low-lying areas. He also emphasized the need to expedite the railway project and called for structural improvements to ensure all-weather connectivity at Pakyong Airport.

Tamang informed the gathering about Sikkim’s Golden Jubilee Year of Statehood, to be celebrated on May 16, 2025, marking 50 years of statehood. He also expressed appreciation for the UNNATI Scheme 2024, which aims to empower youth through employment generation projects.

The Chief Minister extended gratitude to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Governors, Chief Ministers, the Minister of DoNER and NEC officials for their collaborative efforts. He also lauded the Government of Tripura for hosting the meeting with warmth and seamless organization.
