In a landmark development for legal education in Sikkim, Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang inaugurated the Sikkim National Law University (SNLU) today. The ceremony was graced by the Hon’ble Chief Justice and Chancellor of SNLU, Justice Shri Biswanath Somadder, who played a key role in bringing this long-cherished dream to reality.
Addressing the gathering, CM Tamang said the establishment of SNLU is not merely the creation of an institution, but a “sanctuary of justice” and a milestone in strengthening the state’s legal framework. “With this university, the youth of Sikkim now have the opportunity to pursue quality legal education within their homeland,” he said, emphasizing the importance of nurturing a new generation of legal professionals grounded in integrity, compassion, and service.
The Chief Minister acknowledged the collective efforts of the Chief Justice, High Court judges, the Law Department, and other stakeholders, whose tireless work made this achievement possible. Academic operations have already commenced from the Sikkim Judicial Academy, while the SICUN campus at Assam Lingzey has been earmarked for permanent development with state budgetary support.
In addition to SNLU, the government has launched several initiatives to strengthen legal empowerment in the state. These include the Directorate of Prosecution for efficient justice delivery, the Kanooni Sahayog Abhiyan to provide legal aid at the grassroots level, and the Nari Adalat, aimed at empowering women to resolve local disputes informally.
Highlighting Sikkim’s achievements, CM Tamang proudly noted that the state ranks No. 1 among small states in the India Justice Report 2025, excelling in policing, women’s representation, prison management, and judicial efficiency.
He urged students to embrace this opportunity, pursue the path of justice, and become torchbearers of a fair and equitable society. “The Sikkim National Law University will emerge as a beacon of knowledge and justice, contributing significantly to our state and nation,” he said.
