On May 9, Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang convened a crucial high-level meeting to evaluate the state’s preparedness in light of potential crises. The meeting was attended by key officials, including Political Secretary to the Chief Minister Jacob Khaling, Cabinet Secretary V.B. Pathak, Chief Secretary R. Telang, Director General of Police (DGP) Akshay Sachdeva, and Heads of Departments (HODs) from various sectors such as Health, Power, Food & Civil Supplies, Roads & Bridges, Land & Revenue, and Sikkim Police, along with District Commissioners (DCs) and Superintendents of Police (SPs) from all districts.
The meeting focused on assessing the current state of readiness and ensuring that all necessary measures are in place to tackle any potential emergency. Chief Minister Tamang emphasized that each department has been given clear directives to follow in case of an unforeseen crisis.
“In view of the prevailing situation and to assess the State’s preparedness for any potential crisis, I have issued specific instructions to each department. The Power Department must conduct emergency drills and raise public awareness regarding blackout preparedness. The Roads & Bridges Department is tasked with ensuring that all critical infrastructure remains fully operational and structurally sound. Health Services must be on high alert, with hospitals fully equipped and staffed,” said Chief Minister Tamang.
The government has also highlighted the importance of preparedness in essential services. “The Food & Civil Supplies department must maintain an ample stock of essential items and fuel, ensuring uninterrupted distribution. Police and security forces have been instructed to intensify vigilance, particularly along the borders, and conduct regular drills with the IRB and SAP jawans. Disaster Management services are to activate siren systems and deploy trained personnel promptly in any emergency,” he added.
Chief Minister Tamang reassured the citizens of Sikkim that the state government is committed to ensuring public safety and national security. “We are strengthening inter-departmental coordination, reinforcing critical infrastructure, and enhancing emergency response mechanisms across all districts. Our law enforcement agencies, medical services, and civil administration are on high alert,” he said.
The strategic location of Sikkim, bordering several international territories, calls for heightened vigilance. Tamang stressed the state's responsibility to remain prepared for any eventuality, aligning the state’s efforts with national security priorities.
The Chief Minister further urged all citizens to act responsibly, stay informed through official channels, and avoid spreading unverified or sensitive information that might lead to unnecessary panic. “National security is our priority, and the state government is fully committed to safeguarding the territorial integrity and welfare of every citizen,” he said.
