Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang on July 12 expressed deep grief over the demise of Padma Shri awardee Gadul Singh Lama, popularly known as Sanu Lama. Remembering him as a “distinguished figure in the world of Nepali literature” and “a patriotic personality of great stature,” the Chief Minister said his passing marks an immense loss for Sikkim and the broader literary world.

Sanu Lama was not only a gifted writer and lyricist but also a cultural torchbearer who dedicated his life to the growth and promotion of the Nepali language, literature, and identity. His contributions helped elevate Sikkim’s literary voice on the national stage. One of his most celebrated works, ‘Jahan Bagchha Tista Rangit’, remains deeply etched in the hearts of generations of readers.

Chief Minister Tamang said, “Shri Sanu Lama’s life, devoted to the promotion of the Nepali language, literature, and cultural awareness, has left a profound impact on all of us. His creative brilliance, lyrical depth, and dedication to Nepali literature elevated Sikkim’s literary heritage. This is an irreparable loss not only to our state but to the entire literary fraternity.”

In his tribute, the Chief Minister extended his deepest condolences to Sanu Lama’s family, friends, and admirers. “On behalf of the people of Sikkim and from the bottom of my heart, I offer heartfelt sympathies. His legacy will continue to inspire generations, and we will always strive to walk the path he paved,” he said.

The Nepali Sahitya Parishad Sikkim has announced a scaled-down observance of the 211th Bhanu Jayanti celebrations scheduled for July 13, following the demise of eminent literary figure and Padma Shri awardee Sanu Lama.

In a statement issued on Friday, the Parishad said the main function, which was to be held at the Manan Kendra, including various cultural and literary programmes, has been postponed. The observance will now be limited to a floral tribute ceremony at Bhanu Udyan.

The Parishad further informed that the awards and honours traditionally conferred during the Bhanu Jayanti celebration will instead be presented during the upcoming Language Recognition Day.

The decision was taken at an emergency meeting of the Bhanu Jayanti Celebration Committee held at the Parishad Bhavan on Jivan Thing Road, Gangtok. The meeting, chaired by Parishad President Hari Dhungel, also expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Sanu Lama, who was not only a renowned writer and lyricist but also a former president of the Parishad.
