Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic landslide that struck Chaten in Lachen, claiming the lives of three individuals, including two Army personnel and a porter.
In a message shared on June 2, Chief Minister Tamang said, “Deeply saddened by the tragic landslide in Chaten, Lachen that took the lives of Havaldar Lakhwinder Singh, Lance Naik Munish Thakur, and porter Abhishek Lakhada. My heartfelt condolences to their families.”
The Chief Minister also prayed for the speedy recovery of those who were injured in the disaster. He acknowledged the efforts of the rescue teams, saying, “Praying for the speedy recovery of the injured and strength to the rescue teams working tirelessly in harsh conditions.”
The landslide, caused by relentless rain and unstable terrain, occurred in the high-altitude North Sikkim region. Due to its remote location and harsh weather, rescue operations have been extremely difficult. Teams from the Army, state disaster response forces, and local administration are working round the clock to manage the situation and ensure safety.
“This tragedy is a result of severe weather conditions, a stark reminder that natural calamities are beyond our control,” Tamang said. He urged the public to refrain from travel in the affected areas and to remain cautious.
