Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang on Saturday attended the 7th Sarathi Samman Diwas in Sikkim and made a major announcement that is likely to bring relief to thousands of commercial taxi drivers in the state. While addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister expressed his gratitude to the "chalak-gurujis" — a respectful term for drivers — for their hard work and continued contribution to society.
“I am delighted to attend the 7th Sarathi Samman Diwas,” CM Tamang said. “I extend my heartiest congratulations and best wishes to all our respected chalak-gurujis and their families. This day is dedicated to honouring your tireless service, resilience, and essential role in our society.”
One of the key highlights of the event was the launch of a new medical insurance scheme exclusively for licensed commercial taxi drivers operating within Sikkim. As announced by the CM, the scheme will provide up to Rs 5 lakh per year for hospitalization due to illness or accidents. Initially, the scheme will cover 5,000 drivers, with plans to include more drivers in later phases.
"This initiative is meant to support those who support the movement of people every day — our drivers," the Chief Minister said. "Whether it’s a medical emergency due to illness or an accident on the road, this scheme will provide the necessary financial support for treatment."
The Chief Minister also used the occasion to honour different categories of drivers in the state. He paid tribute to government-employed drivers, private transport operators, and truck and tipper drivers who keep goods moving and help support the economy. CM Tamang also appreciated tourist vehicle drivers who, according to him, “welcome guests to Sikkim with warmth, hospitality, and grace, playing a vital role in the tourism sector.”
He made special mention of women drivers, calling them an inspiration for society. “From mothers and daughters to daughters-in-law, many women are driving today while also taking care of their homes. They show courage, confidence, and strength. They deserve special recognition,” he said.
The event saw participation from hundreds of drivers and transport operators from across the state. Many attendees welcomed the new health scheme and praised the government’s effort to acknowledge their hard work.
The Chief Minister concluded his speech by thanking all drivers for their dedicated service and urged them to continue their work with “pride, unity, and purpose.” He emphasized the important role of transport workers in keeping the state’s economy and daily life functioning smoothly.
Sarathi Samman Diwas is observed every year to recognize the efforts of drivers who work in different sectors across Sikkim. The day serves as a platform for the government to interact with this vital community and address their needs and concerns.
