Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang marked the grand conclusion of the 15-day-long Sikkim State-Level Environment Festival 2025, held under the theme “Leave a Green Legacy.” The event, coinciding with the state's 50th Statehood anniversary celebrations, was both a celebration and a call for collective commitment to a greener and more sustainable future.
Addressing a large gathering of officials, environmental champions, and citizens at the concluding ceremony, CM Tamang said, “It is a privilege and a moment of deep responsibility to be part of this festival. This celebration highlights our spiritual, cultural, and social connection with nature.” He emphasized that Sikkim’s development model continues to inspire India and the world in the field of environmental sustainability.
Speaking on recent milestones, the Chief Minister outlined the state’s major achievements in green governance. Sikkim had the honor of representing India at COP28 in Dubai in 2023, where flagship initiatives like Mero Rukh Mero Santati and Shishu Samriddhi Yojana garnered global attention. The state’s efforts were also recognized with the prestigious SKOCH Award 2024 for the Mero Rukh Mero Santati campaign.
In 2025, Sikkim was declared the Best State in Environmental Education, underscoring its commitment to grassroots awareness and ecological literacy. Another milestone was the designation of Khecheopalri Lake as Sikkim’s first Ramsar Site, marking a significant moment in the preservation of wetlands and biodiversity in the state.
CM Tamang also underlined Sikkim’s leadership in curbing plastic pollution. Long before national mandates, Sikkim had already banned single-use plastic and related products, setting an example for other states to follow. “In line with the global theme of ‘Ending Plastic Pollution,’ our early actions have inspired broader national policies,” he said.
