Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang has called for long-term improvements to the region’s highway network, highlighting the urgent need for better road infrastructure to ensure smooth travel and economic development. The Chief Minister made the remarks after meeting with a delegation from the National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL), led by Managing Director Dr. Krishan Kumar, at his official residence, Mintokgang, on Sunday.

During the meeting, the Chief Minister and the NHIDCL team discussed the ongoing problems with the Sevoke–Gangtok highway, which remains a major lifeline for the state. Due to the region’s rough terrain and frequent weather-related disruptions, the road often becomes risky and inconvenient, especially during the monsoon season. Chief Minister Tamang stressed the urgent need for a permanent solution.

“I have requested the construction of a standard double-lane highway to make year-round travel easier and safer for our people,” said the Chief Minister. He added that it was encouraging to know NHIDCL has already appointed a consultant to begin work on the proposed highway upgrade.

The Sevoke–Gangtok highway has long been the main link between Sikkim and the rest of the country. However, landslides, poor road conditions, and heavy rains often make travel difficult, affecting both passenger and goods movement. The proposed upgrade is expected to bring much-needed relief to commuters and strengthen the state’s transport network.

In addition to the Sevoke–Gangtok issue, Chief Minister Tamang also thanked the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways for declaring the Melli–Singtam road as National Highway 210. The 23-kilometre-long route has already begun to show positive results, according to officials.

“The new NH-210 is a major step forward. It has helped reduce pressure on the main highway and opened up new economic possibilities for the areas it connects,” said the Chief Minister.
