Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang attended the 40th birthday celebration of His Holiness the 17th Gyalwang Karmapa, Ogyen Trinley Dorje, at the Dharma Chakra Centre in Rumtek Monastery on Thursday morning. The Chief Minister said it was a moment of deep honour for him to take part in the sacred event, which holds great religious and cultural significance for the people of Sikkim and Buddhist followers across the globe.
In a heartfelt message, the Chief Minister shared that the occasion was made even more special by the presence of Kyabje Zurmang Gharwang Rinpoche. His presence, according to the Chief Minister, added immense spiritual depth to the celebrations and brought blessings to all those in attendance.
On behalf of the people of Sikkim, CM Tamang offered prayers for the good health, long life, and continued enlightened activities of His Holiness. He said the compassion and wisdom of the Karmapa have inspired countless individuals around the world and continue to provide spiritual guidance to many.
“I was also privileged to attend the sacred Sang Puja, which was presided over by His Holiness virtually,” the Chief Minister noted. Though the Karmapa joined the prayers online, the CM said it was a deeply moving experience for all who were present. The Sang Puja, a significant prayer ceremony in Tibetan Buddhism, became a moment of unity and reflection for the monastic community and devotees alike.
He further said that even through a virtual presence, the Karmapa's words and blessings had a powerful impact on the spiritual atmosphere of the day. The gathering at Rumtek reflected a collective prayer for peace, compassion, and spiritual strength under the guidance of His Holiness.
The Chief Minister also expressed his hope that the 17th Gyalwang Karmapa would continue to illuminate the path of Dharma and guide countless beings with his deep wisdom and boundless compassion. He emphasized the role of His Holiness as a beacon of hope and inner peace for many in today’s world.
Rumtek Monastery, which serves as the main seat of the Karmapa in exile, was beautifully decorated for the occasion. Monks, devotees, and guests from various corners of the state and beyond gathered to mark the spiritual leader’s birthday. Traditional prayers, chants, and rituals echoed through the monastery’s walls, creating a serene and holy atmosphere.
The celebration stood not only as a birthday observance but also as a reaffirmation of faith and devotion among the people of Sikkim. For many, the presence of the Chief Minister at the monastery also symbolized the close bond between the state’s leadership and the spiritual community.
The birthday event at Rumtek marks yet another milestone in the spiritual life of the 17th Gyalwang Karmapa, who is regarded as one of the most important figures in Tibetan Buddhism. His teachings and humanitarian message have reached far beyond the Himalayan region, touching hearts globally.
As the ceremony concluded, many offered their personal wishes and prayers for the continued well-being and leadership of His Holiness. The Chief Minister extended gratitude for being able to witness such a momentous occasion.
“May His Holiness continue to guide all beings towards peace and enlightenment for many years to come,” CM Tamang said.
