A strong voice of dissent has emerged from Sikkim against the recurring proposal of merging Sikkim and Darjeeling. Palden Gyatso Nangpa, a concerned citizen of Sikkim, has criticized the idea put forth by Gorkha Rashtriya Congress's Bharat Dong during a press conference on January 8.
In his statement, Nangpa highlighted the impracticality of revisiting historical disputes, likening the proposal to "digging a grave of a hundred years old and trying to profess and claim the property to whom it belonged." He acknowledged past missteps by leaders of both regions but emphasized that much time has passed and both communities have evolved separately, maintaining their unique identities.
“We have surpassed one too many decades and moved on with our separate uniqueness as Sikkimese Indians and you as Indian Gorkha,” Nangpa said urging all parties to embrace the philosophy of "live and let live."
Nangpa also pointed out the historical context, arguing that the merger proposal might have held relevance in 1975 when Sikkim was integrated into India. However, he believes the opportunity to raise such a claim has long since passed. “Perhaps, if you had articulated your statement then, it would have made sense, but you missed the opportunity that was there,” he said.
Nangpa further criticized attempts to involve the British era’s legacy in the debate, stating that such efforts are neither practical nor reflective of present-day realities. He said that Darjeeling’s leadership, including Anit Thapa and Neeraj Zimba has not endorsed Dong’s claims and further added that they are representatives of the people of Darjeeling with no mandate to decide for Sikkim.
“No offence meant, but I don’t think any Sikkimese soul is willing to be submerged. We shall fight this battle come what may for our unique identity that was bestowed by our Chogyal.”, Nangpa said.
