The 134th Birth Anniversary of Bharat Ratna Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar was celebrated with great respect and enthusiasm at the Sikkim Legislative Assembly in Gangtok on April 14, 2025. The event was organized by the Social Welfare Department, Government of Sikkim and witnessed the participation of several dignitaries, including Sikkim Governor Om Prakash Mathur, Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang, and Speaker Rajkumari Thapa, along with ministers and officials.
In his address, Governor Om Prakash Mathur paid rich tribute to Dr. Ambedkar, describing him as the chief architect of the Indian Constitution, a renowned jurist, and a strong voice for social justice. The Governor recalled Babasaheb’s lifelong commitment to the upliftment of the poor, the fight against caste discrimination, and his dedication to education and equality.
Governor Mathur also spoke on the importance of women in Indian society, linking his remarks to International Women’s Day, which he said is not just a celebration but a moment to recognize the strength, sacrifices, and achievements of women across generations.
He recalled historical examples, such as a tale from Rajasthan’s Mewar royal family, where a nurse-like figure known as “Dhai Maa” sacrificed her own child to save a royal heir. “This shows the ultimate sacrifice of maternal power,” the Governor said. He also mentioned the courage of queens in India’s history who made sacrifices in the name of duty, including a story where a queen gave her head to the king as a token of strength before battle.
The Governor said that women have always been central to society, not only as caregivers but also as warriors, thinkers, educators, and leaders. He praised historical figures like Meera Bai, Rani Lakshmibai, Savitribai Phule and Ahilyabai Holkar for their roles in shaping the nation. He also mentioned women freedom fighters such as Kanaklata Barua, Helen Lepcha and Bhogeswari Phukanani, who showed courage and patriotism.
In his speech, Governor Mathur highlighted the modern-day contributions of women from Sikkim who have brought pride to the state in fields like sports, mountaineering, and science. He added that Sikkimese women have been leaders in entrepreneurship too, with names like Rinching Choden Bhutia and Meena Rai creating opportunities and businesses that have impacted lives both locally and globally.
He said that women’s safety and status in Sikkim were commendable. “Our state is known for women’s empowerment. Crimes against women are rare, and women are active in every field, from agriculture and education to village governance,” he said. Citing the fact that 50% of seats in Panchayats are reserved for women, he praised the participation of women in decision-making at the grassroots level.
Governor Mathur also credited the Modi Government for launching several landmark initiatives aimed at empowering women, including Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao, Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana, Ujjwala Yojana, and PM Awas Yojana. He said these schemes have helped women become financially independent and socially empowered, not just in cities but also in villages.
The Governor said everyone must remember and should not forget Dr. Ambedkar’s vision. “The progress of any society can be measured by the progress of its women,” he said. “Today, as we remember Babasaheb, let us also honor the power of womanhood that drives our nation forward.”
