The third part of the second session of the 11th Sikkim Legislative Assembly concluded peacefully today, marking the successful completion of the Budget Session 2025-26. The Assembly passed various proposals aimed at the welfare of the people of Sikkim through a sound majority.
During the session, Chief Minister Prem SIngh Tamang said that SIkkim government is committed to ensuring that no student in Sikkim is deprived of higher education due to financial constraints. He highlighted the Chief Minister Education Scheme, which covers study expenses for students from economically weaker backgrounds. "Many students with dreams of becoming pilots or doctors are now receiving free education under this scheme," the Chief Minister stated.
In addition to education, the Chief Minister outlined the government's initiatives in healthcare, stating that financial assistance is being provided for lung, liver, heart, and kidney transplants. He also spoke about the Mobile Village Clinic program and the construction of high-level hospitals in all districts, ensuring better medical facilities for the people.
The Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) Party strongly supported the establishment of new schools, colleges, and universities, asserting that promoting education is the government's priority. In a sharp critique of the previous administration, the SKM party alleged that the former government prioritized drug-related activities over education. "We are replacing drug plantations with institutions of learning," the party stated.
The SKM Party further criticized past governance practices, claiming that there was no political violence after elections under the current administration. It also took a swipe at the former Chief Minister, alleging that while he sent his daughter to Harvard University on government expenses, the opposition is now opposing the creation of a university in Sikkim.
The SKM Party expressed gratitude to the Assembly Speaker, Deputy Speaker, Chief Minister, Ministers, MLAs, and Assembly staff for ensuring a smooth and orderly session. They also extended appreciation to journalists, the Chief Secretary, Director General of Police (DGP), and other officials for their contributions in bringing the Assembly discussions to the public.
