Sikkim is taking big steps to promote tourism in both rural and adventure sectors. The state government, led by Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang, is working to attract more visitors by developing remote villages and introducing new adventure activities.
Tourism Minister Tshering Thendup Bhutia recently spoke about these efforts. He highlighted that Sikkim has introduced bungee jumping and conducted a trial for hot air balloon rides. “We have experienced hot air ballooning ourselves, and it is one of the most exciting activities in adventure tourism,” Bhutia said. “Many tourists visit a place for sightseeing, but without activities, they may leave in a day. Adventure tourism will encourage them to stay longer.”
At the Sikkim Rural Tourism Meeting, the government outlined its plans to develop rural tourism. Uttarey, a beautiful village near the Nepal border in the Maneybong–Dentam area is one of the focus areas. The village is home to the famous Singshore Bridge, Asia’s second-largest suspension bridge. To enhance tourist experiences, a glass-bottom walkway is being added to the bridge.
The government has also launched the "Sikkim Inspires Go" initiative to train unemployed youth and women in tourism-related jobs. Around 19-20 tourism skills have been identified, and trained individuals will get job opportunities in the tourism sector. “We want our youth, especially in remote areas, to gain skills and earn a livelihood through tourism,” Bhutia said.
To promote these initiatives, the government recently hosted a Rural Tourism Meet, inviting bloggers, YouTubers, and media representatives. A B2B meeting was also held with tourism stakeholders to discuss global promotion strategies.
The Chiwabhanjyang International Road Corridor is another major project nearing completion. This road will connect Sikkim to Nepal, boosting trade and tourism. “The main cutting is done, and blacktopping is in progress,” Bhutia said. The state government is in talks with the central government to finalize agreements for cross-border trade.
Sikkim is also focusing on adventure tourism. Along with bungee jumping and hot air balloon trials, the government has successfully conducted paragliding from Sopakha hill. Plans are in place to regulate and sustain these activities. “High-end tourists are drawn to adventure tourism, which can benefit the economy,” Bhutia said.
