The Sikkim unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has strongly criticized former Chief Minister Pawan Chamling for his recent remarks on the possibility of a Sikkim-Darjeeling merger. The party has called his statement “immature, false, and politically motivated,” and said that it is misleading the people for political gain. According to the BJP, Chamling’s claim that the central government can make the merger happen is entirely baseless and does not hold any legal or political weight.
Reacting to Chamling’s statement, the BJP stated that the merger of Sikkim and Darjeeling is an impossible idea and has no basis in reality. The party accused Chamling and other political leaders of bringing up this issue repeatedly to stay relevant in politics. The Sikkim BJP urged politicians to focus on real developmental issues rather than spreading misinformation on a matter that is legally and practically unattainable.
Chamling had mentioned Article 3 of the Indian Constitution while making his statement, but the Sikkim BJP argued that he had presented an incomplete and misleading interpretation of the law. The party clarified that Article 3 clearly states that any bill proposing a change in the boundaries of a state must first have the recommendation of the President of India. Without the President’s approval, neither the central government, Parliament, nor any state government can take any action on such a matter. Even if the President recommends the bill, it must be discussed and approved in both the Sikkim and West Bengal State Assemblies before any decision is made. The BJP said that Chamling’s claim ignored these critical legal steps and misinformed the public.
The BJP said that a Sikkim-Darjeeling merger is not possible under any circumstances. The party condemned the repeated discussions on this topic, calling it a political strategy used by certain leaders to maintain their relevance. The BJP requested all political parties to stop misleading the people with false hopes and instead focus on addressing real issues affecting Sikkim.
