The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of Sikkim has sent a strong appeal to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, asking for immediate help for North Sikkim’s Mangan District and other areas badly affected by natural disasters over the past two years.

The trouble began with the Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) in 2023. This sudden flood caused heavy damage across the region. Since then, the monsoons in 2024 and 2025 brought severe landslides that worsened the situation. Roads, bridges, and hydropower projects have been destroyed, cutting off many places from the rest of the state. The tourism industry, which many people depend on for their livelihood, has also come to a halt.

Earlier this week, a team from BJP visited the Mangan District to see the damage firsthand. After their visit, the party’s president, DR Thapa, signed a petition that was sent to the Prime Minister’s office. The petition describes the serious problems faced by the people, including loss of lives, damage to important infrastructure, and the collapse of businesses and jobs.

The BJP has asked the government to officially declare the 2023 flood and its after-effects as a National Disaster. This will allow the state to receive special help from the Centre. The party also wants a special package to help rebuild the damaged areas and make them stronger against future disasters.

Among other requests, the BJP has asked for a combined team of central and state officials to work together to plan and carry out relief and rebuilding efforts. They also want a new authority to be set up under central government bodies like the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) or the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA). This authority would focus only on disaster rehabilitation in North Sikkim.

The petition calls for permanent homes for families who have been displaced by the floods and landslides. It also asks for work to stabilize dangerous slopes and clear and strengthen riverbanks along the Teesta River to prevent future floods. Local businesses badly hit by the disasters should get help with their loans. The BJP has also pushed for fast-tracking major projects like the Sevoke–Rangpo Railway Line and creating alternate road routes to improve long-term connectivity for the region.

BJP Sikkim expressed full trust in Prime Minister Modi’s leadership and his vision of a developed India. They believe that with the right help from the Centre, the people of North Sikkim can recover from this crisis and build a safer, stronger future.
