The nation mourned deeply as the mortal remains of Sepoy Sainudheen PK, who lost his life in a landslide at Chatten, North Sikkim were finally brought home after a difficult and complex journey covering nearly 2,500 kilometres. His remains were recovered on June 8, 2025, after eight long days of continuous search efforts by the Indian Army.
Sepoy Sainudheen was born on December 20, 1991, in the island village of Androth in Lakshadweep. He joined the Indian Army in March 2012 and served his country with honour for over 13 years. His service took him to some of the toughest military locations in India, including the icy and harsh heights of the Siachen Glacier. His fellow soldiers and commanding officers remember him as a disciplined, dedicated and professional soldier who gave his best every day.
The final journey of Sepoy Sainudheen was both a physical and emotional passage. From the remote and mountainous region of North Sikkim, his remains were transported back to his native island of Androth in Lakshadweep. This long journey, covering almost 2,500 kilometres, was a joint effort of the Indian Army, Indian Air Force, and Indian Navy, working together in coordination with the local administration. Army helicopters, Indian Air Force planes including the C-295 aircraft, and naval units all played a role in ensuring the soldier’s body was returned with respect and dignity.
On June 8, a solemn wreath-laying ceremony took place at Bengdubi Military Station in West Bengal, where full military honours were given in tribute to Sepoy Sainudheen’s sacrifice. Later, at Androth, the Indian Navy held a Guard of Honour, showing respect to the brave soldier who gave his life in service of the nation.
The Commanding Officer of Sepoy Sainudheen spoke about the soldier’s qualities, saying, “Sepoy Sainudheen PK represented the very best of the Indian Army’s values — quiet professionalism, total integrity, and unshakable dedication. Whether he was serving at the icy heights of Siachen or the rugged mountains of Sikkim, he showed courage and calm that inspired everyone around him. His sacrifice reminds us that true bravery is in serving others selflessly, even when facing unknown dangers. We salute our comrade and son of India, whose memory will always guide us.”
This was not just a transportation of a soldier’s remains but a nation’s way of showing its deepest gratitude. The teamwork among the Army, Navy, and Air Force, and the respect given by every person involved, reflect the unbreakable bond between a soldier and his country. Sepoy Sainudheen’s journey back home is a symbol of the promise India holds to honour those who serve and protect it.
