A bi-monthly inspection of the hydro power projects under the NHPC and DANS energy initiatives concluded today in Soreng district. The inspection was conducted by a district team led by Prem K Subba, SDM (HQ, Soreng), and included key officials from the Power Department, Forest Department, and local law enforcement.

The team, which included Mr. Deepen Sharma, DE (Power Department), Mr. Jigme W Bhutia, SHO (Nayabazar PS), and Mr. Padam Bdr Gurung, BO (T) (Forest Department), along with other experts such as Mr. Nima Sherpa, Mr. S.P Lal, Mr. Anoop Bhatnagar (COO), and Sandeep Katoch (DGM), conducted a thorough inspection of the safety measures and warning systems at various dam sites.

The primary goal of the inspection was to evaluate the effectiveness of safety protocols and communication systems in place at the hydro power project locations. The team assessed the adequacy of signage, audible devices, and communication systems designed to alert the public to potential hazards, such as sudden changes in the flow rate at tailwater areas. Other aspects, including power and communication lines, signage lights, and announcement mechanisms, were also closely examined.

Special attention was given to restraining devices like fences and barriers, along with the presence of uniformed guards and watchmen to ensure comprehensive safety around the sites.

During the inspection, it was suggested that NHPC Rangit Stage IV install additional warning sirens in critical areas, particularly near densely populated regions along the Akarbridge to Pipalay and Reshi Bazar highways. This recommendation aims to enhance public safety by ensuring early warnings for communities living in close proximity to the power project areas.

Furthermore, NHPC officials were instructed to focus on the beautification and repair of the Reshi Highway Tunnel, a vital passage linking Soreng and Gyalshing districts. The NHPC confirmed that a proposal for the necessary repairs and beautification work is already in progress and will be submitted to the board for approval soon.
