Sikkim Assembly delegation joins National Speakers’ Conference at Delhi Vidhan Sabha
The national conference was organized to mark the centenary of Shri Vithalbhai Jhaverbhai Patel’s historic appointment as the first Indian elected Speaker of the legislature.

A delegation from the Sikkim Legislative Assembly led by Speaker Shri Mingma Norbu Sherpa and Deputy Speaker Smt. Raj Kumari Thapa, along with Secretary Shri Lalit Kumar Gurung and senior officials, took part in the Conference of All India Speakers and Deputy Speakers held at the Delhi Vidhan Sabha on Saturday.
The national conference was organized to mark the centenary of Shri Vithalbhai Jhaverbhai Patel’s historic appointment as the first Indian elected Speaker of the legislature. The event began with floral tributes at Patel’s statue, followed by the inauguration and viewing of a special exhibition that highlighted his life and contributions to Indian parliamentary democracy.
The conference was inaugurated by Union Home Minister Shri Amit Shah, who paid rich tributes to Vithalbhai Patel’s legacy in strengthening India’s legislative system during the pre-independence period. The inaugural ceremony was attended by Union Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Shri Kiren Rijiju, Lieutenant Governor of Delhi Shri V.K. Saxena, Delhi Chief Minister Smt. Rekha Gupta, members of the Delhi Legislative Assembly, and presiding officers from across the country.
The second session of the conference featured deliberations on two key themes. The first discussion, titled “Role of Nationalist Leaders of the Pre-Independence Central Legislatures in Freedom Movement and Social Reforms”, was addressed by Union Minister for Culture and Tourism Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, who emphasized how nationalist leaders used legislative platforms to push forward India’s struggle for independence.
The second theme, “India – Mother of Democracy”, was led by Shri Harivansh, Deputy Chairman of Rajya Sabha, who underlined India’s deep-rooted democratic traditions and the importance of preserving them through strong legislative practices.
Later in the evening, the delegates from Sikkim and other states attended a briefing meeting at the Lok Sabha Secretariat in connection with the upcoming 68th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference (CPC), scheduled to be held in Bridgetown, Barbados, from October 6 to 12, 2025. The meeting was presided over by Lok Sabha Speaker Shri Om Birla, who guided the delegates on India’s role in the international parliamentary forum.
