Shanti Rai, a determined and passionate trail runner from Sikkim, has made her state and the country proud once again by winning the 75 km Mawla Ghati Ultra Trail Run held on June 14, 2025, in Pune, Maharashtra. This challenging trail race tested the endurance, strength, and willpower of all the participants, but Shanti Rai emerged at the top with her steady performance and strong spirit.

The Mawla Ghati Ultra Trail Run is not just any ordinary race. It is part of the prestigious ITRA (International Trail Running Association) National League of India and is also recognized under the UTMB (Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc) Index Races. These races give runners the opportunity to earn international ranking points and qualify for major global trail running events in the future.

This is not the first time Shanti Rai has proven her capability in such competitive events. Earlier, on November 23, 2024, she secured third place in the BRUTE 4:0 Ultra Trail Run, a 60 km race held in Basar, Arunachal Pradesh. That event too was a part of the ITRA National League and counted towards UTMB qualifications.

Both the Mawla Ghati and BRUTE 4:0 events were highly competitive and physically demanding, held in diverse and difficult terrains, and attracting elite runners from across the country. Earning top positions in such races is no easy task, and it requires months of preparation, high endurance training, and mental strength. Shanti Rai has shown all of this through her performance.

Runners who complete these recognized races and meet the necessary criteria will be eligible to participate in international trail running events, including the UTMB World Series events and the World Championship Trail Races set for 2026. These championships are considered the highest level of competition in the trail running community across the world.

Shanti’s back-to-back success in two ITRA and UTMB recognized events puts her in a strong position for selection in the upcoming 2026 World Championships. It also adds important UTMB and ITRA points to her record, increasing her visibility in the international trail running circuit.
