The search operation for the missing tourists from the tragic road accident that occurred on May 29 near Munshithang in North Sikkim is still going on. Even after several days, the teams on the ground have not stopped looking, despite bad weather and tough conditions in the area.

The rescue operation is being carried out by a joint team of officials from various departments. On Monday, the Tourism and Civil Aviation Department team, led by Joint Director (Adventure) Mr. Kazi Sherpa, made another effort to search near the accident site. He was joined by Deputy Director (Adventure) Mr. Manoj Chettri, Tourist Officer Mr. Anup Subba, and Information Assistant Mr. Sonam Pintso Bhutia. They worked closely with the district tourism office in Mangan and the Indian Himalayan Centre for Adventure & Eco-Tourism (IHCAE).

The entire operation is being conducted with the support of the local administration. The Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) of Chungthang and SDPO Chungthang are leading the coordination efforts with police, fire and emergency services, forest officials, and members of the Travel Agents Association of Sikkim (TAAS). Other tourism stakeholders are also helping in this critical mission.

Family members of some of the missing tourists were also present at the site. They wanted to witness the efforts being made and understand the situation on the ground. Their presence added an emotional weight to the already difficult rescue work.

In addition to the Tourism Department, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) is also involved in the search. On June 1 and 2, the NDRF and Tourism Department teams jointly searched a stretch of nearly 3 to 4 kilometers downstream from the accident site. They focused on areas along the riverbed where there is a chance that the missing individuals might be found.

The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) is also actively working. Their team, led by ASI SAP Mr. Dawa Sherpa, is searching the river belts around Toong, Ritchu Khola, Chungthang, and further downstream. These areas are being carefully checked for any sign of the missing tourists.

The rescue teams are facing major challenges. The weather has not been favorable, with frequent rain causing the water level in rivers to rise. Many roads and bridges have also been damaged, making it harder to move around. Still, the teams continue to do their best every day.

Locals from nearby villages have also stepped in to help, showing support and offering information where they can. Their help has been valuable in reaching tough spots and sharing knowledge of the terrain.

Officials have said that the search will continue until there is a breakthrough. They have also assured the families that every possible effort is being made to locate their loved ones.
