A team of senior leaders from the Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF), led by party president and former Chief Minister Pawan Chamling, met the Governor of Sikkim, Om Prakash Mathur at Raj Bhavan in a courtesy visit on May 31. The meeting touched on various important issues concerning the state’s growth, challenges and future roadmap.
The delegation included Mrs. Niru Sewa, Sakun Gurung, Komal Chamling, Mr. Shakti Singh Chaudhary, Vijay Pradhan, and Rikzing Norbu Dorji Bhutia. They extended a warm welcome to the Governor and congratulated him for serving the state during its 50th year as a democratic entity.
During the interaction, the Governor and the SDF leaders had detailed discussions on Sikkim’s progress, the importance of maintaining peace and law and order, and the future path of development. They talked about several achievements of the state, such as the reservation of 33% jobs for women and 50% seats for women in Panchayats, Sikkim's fully organic farming status, and its success in creating a solid base for tourism and industrial growth.
The leaders also highlighted key tourism destinations developed in the state, including Char Dham, Buddha Park, Samdupche, Bhaledhunga, and newer attractions like the ropeway and skywalk. They discussed how tourism has become a vital part of the state’s economy and must be supported with better infrastructure.
However, the Governor pointed out some major concerns, especially the poor condition of road networks. He shared that the state’s main highway, NH 10, is in bad shape, particularly in rural areas. He informed the delegation that the highway has now been handed over to the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation (NHIDCL) for better maintenance. He also revealed plans for a third alternative highway to ease transportation challenges.
Another important topic was the expansion of Pakyong Airport. The Governor said efforts are underway to make the airport ready for bigger aircraft, including Boeing planes, which would boost connectivity and tourism.
The SDF team appreciated the Governor’s efforts and assured him of their support in all steps taken for the development of the state.
On the political and social front, serious concerns were raised about the rise in drug abuse, increasing crime against women, suicides, and political violence. The SDF team noted that these problems have become more frequent and need urgent attention. In response, the Governor gave a strong assurance that these matters would be looked into seriously and steps would be taken to maintain peace and safety in Sikkim.
The Governor also urged SDF president Pawan Chamling to keep meeting him regularly to share feedback and discuss matters of importance to the state.
In a statement after the meeting, the SDF said that the visit was not only a show of respect but also a reaffirmation of their commitment to the prosperity of Sikkim and the values of democracy.
