Santanu Kumar Swain appointed new Vice Chancellor of Sikkim University

His career began in 1981 as an Assistant Professor at Ravenshaw College, where he worked for 15 years.

The Centre has appointed Professor Santanu Kumar Swain, a respected academic from Banaras Hindu University (BHU), as the new Vice Chancellor of Sikkim University. His term will last for five years or until he turns 70, whichever comes earlier. He takes over from Professor Abhijit Dutta of the Department of Commerce, who was holding the post.

Professor Swain is well-known in academic circles for his long career in teaching, research, and higher education management. He has spent decades working in classrooms and administrative offices, guiding students, mentoring young teachers, and building research programmes. His work has earned him several awards from academic bodies and professional organisations.

Born and educated in Odisha, Professor Swain completed his Master’s in Education from Kurukshetra University in 1981, followed by an M.Phil. in 1982. He later earned a Bachelor’s degree in Law from Utkal University in 1988 and went on to study Education Project Planning Management at the University of Leeds in the UK in 1991. He completed his Ph.D. in Education from Utkal University in 1996 and later achieved a Doctor of Literature (D.Litt.) in 2005. Along the way, he also picked up a Diploma in Computer Applications from Ravenshaw University in 2003.

His career began in 1981 as an Assistant Professor at Ravenshaw College, where he worked for 15 years. He later became an Associate Professor at Ravenshaw University from 1996 to 2007, before joining BHU as a Professor of Education, where he continues to serve.

Professor Swain has published widely in both national and international journals. His works cover a wide range of topics in education, including teacher training, educational technology, social science teaching, and peace education. Some of his books and research titles include Higher Education: Issues and Innovation, The Keys to Empowerment of Teachers, ICT in Teacher Education, and Art, Aesthetics and Work Education.

Over the years, his contributions have been recognised with honours such as the Young Educationist Award from SR Foundation Trust, the Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Fund Award, and the Professional Excellence Award from the Orissa Secondary School Teachers Association. He also won a Gold Medal from Kurukshetra University for his academic excellence.
