The Sant Nirankari Mission, in partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme, observed World Environment Day with a meaningful program at Central Park, Namchi. The event aimed to raise awareness about protecting the environment and the urgent need to stop plastic pollution.

The day started with a morning assembly where the Sant Nirankari Charitable Foundation welcomed everyone and spoke about how both individual and community efforts are important in fighting plastic waste.

The program’s chief guest, Shri Satish Chandra Rai, Honourable Member of Legislative Assembly from Namchi Singithang, officially opened the event by planting a sapling. In his speech, he stressed the importance of sustainable living and urged everyone to “End the plastic waste and preserve the beauty of Sikkim for generations to come.”

After the inauguration, representatives from various local departments took turns to share their ideas and success stories. Among them were Shri Ganesh Rai from the Namchi Municipal Council, the Ward Councilor, Rama Tamang, Vice President of Nari Shakti Morcha, Samika Tamang, Nari Convenor, and Richen Bhutia, Youth Convenor.

The program included several activities to engage the community, such as a tree plantation drive and a cleanliness drive to promote a cleaner environment. There was also a campaign walk to raise public awareness, along with informative sessions to educate people about environmental issues. Additionally, a Nukkad Natak, or street play, was performed to creatively highlight the importance of protecting nature. The event concluded with sustainability pledge initiatives, encouraging participants to commit to eco-friendly practices in their daily lives.

These activities were part of a larger effort happening simultaneously in 18 hill stations across India.

Through this event, the Sant Nirankari Charitable Foundation sent a strong message: by working together, we can fight plastic pollution and make India cleaner and greener. The foundation also reaffirmed its commitment to supporting local actions that align with the global movement to end plastic pollution for good.
