Teenager Sam Konstas made a remarkable debut as Australia took control of the opening session of the Boxing Day Test against India at the MCG.
After winning the toss and opting to bat, Australia reached 112/1 at lunch, with Usman Khawaja (38*) and Marnus Labuschagne (12*) remaining at the crease. Konstas, who overcame a nervy start, blasted a quickfire 60, showcasing his flair against India’s potent fast bowlers.
The 19-year-old's 65-ball innings included six fours and two sixes, with Konstas bringing up his half-century in just 52 deliveries. However, he was eventually trapped LBW by Ravindra Jadeja, marking the only wicket for India during an enthralling opening session.
A mid-pitch exchange between Konstas and Virat Kohli added to the drama, with the young Australian showing composure beyond his years. His debut performance follows a decision to replace Nathan McSweeney in the XI.
India made a major change to their lineup, with Shubman Gill being dropped and Rohit Sharma moving to No.3, while Washington Sundar came in at No.7. Both teams are eyeing a win to secure a place in next year’s ICC World Test Championship Final.
