Darjeeling MP and BJP national spokesperson Raju Bista visited the Prayas Welfare Development Society in Lenin Colony, Matigara, on Sunday where he spent time with the residents of the shelter. The home currently provides care to 52 blind and divyangjan individuals, including 42 children and 10 elderly people.
Bista described his visit as both humbling and inspiring. He interacted with the children and elderly residents, appreciating their spirit and resilience despite the many challenges they face. He also acknowledged the relentless efforts of the society’s staff and volunteers, who have dedicated themselves to serving some of the most vulnerable sections of society.
“The compassion and commitment shown by the members and volunteers of Prayas Welfare Development Society are truly commendable,” Bista said during his visit. “On behalf of the people of Darjeeling, I thank them for the extraordinary work they are doing to provide care, dignity, and empowerment to those in need.”
During the visit, Bista also praised the leadership of President Aditya Modak, Secretary Basant Barman, and other society members for their dedication. He said that such community-driven initiatives play a vital role in building an inclusive and compassionate society.
To further support the shelter, Bista said that he would allocate funds from his Member of Parliament Local Area Development (MPLAD) scheme to improve the facilities at Prayas. The funds are expected to go towards infrastructure upgrades, better learning tools, and healthcare support for the residents.
“Every citizen deserves to live with dignity and respect,” the MP said. “It is our collective duty to extend a helping hand to those who need it the most. I will ensure that this institution receives support to expand its services and create a better environment for its residents.”
