Darjeeling Member of Parliament and BJP national spokesperson Raju Bista today met senior officers of the Border Security Force (BSF) in Siliguri and lauded their role in safeguarding the nation’s borders. The Inspector General of BSF, North Bengal Frontier, along with other senior officials from the Kadamtala headquarters, called on Bista during a courtesy visit. The meeting, held in Siliguri, focused on key issues concerning the region and important security matters.
Speaking about the meeting, Bista said that the BSF plays an irreplaceable role in protecting the strategically important “Chicken Neck” corridor, a narrow stretch of land in North Bengal that connects the entire North East with the rest of India. This corridor is considered highly sensitive due to its location and proximity to international borders.
The MP said that the BSF not only safeguards the nation against external threats but also works tirelessly to prevent a wide range of cross-border crimes. He pointed out that the India-Bangladesh border, which extends over 4,100 km, includes more than 2,200 km passing through West Bengal, making the role of BSF personnel in the state even more crucial.
According to Bista, BSF jawans and officers remain constantly vigilant against illegal immigration, cattle smuggling, narcotics trade, human trafficking, arms smuggling, and circulation of counterfeit currency. Their work ensures peace and security for people living in border villages as well as for the nation as a whole.
“The BSF has been performing their duty with unmatched dedication and commitment,” Bista said. “On behalf of the people of Darjeeling Hills, Terai, and Dooars, I deeply appreciate their tireless service to the nation.”
He added that the presence of BSF on the borders has not only acted as a shield against criminal activities but has also brought a sense of safety to local residents. The law-abiding citizens in border regions feel secure because of the sacrifices and commitment shown by the BSF, he said.
The Darjeeling MP also said that the challenges faced by BSF personnel are enormous. Guarding long stretches of riverine and forested borders, often in difficult weather conditions, requires courage and discipline. Yet, despite the hardships, BSF officers and jawans remain devoted to their duty day and night.
Bista noted that the role of BSF goes beyond border security. In many instances, they assist civilians during natural disasters like floods, and their welfare activities in villages have helped win the trust of local communities. “They are not only protectors of our borders but also friends of the people living near the border areas,” he said.
