Member of Parliament from Darjeeling and BJP National Spokesperson, Shri Raju Bista, today paid heartfelt tribute to the renowned folk musician and madal maestro, Padma Shri Kazi Singh, during a special event held at Ramkrishna Rangamanch (Town Hall) in Kalimpong. The event was organised by “Hamro Lok Sanskriti Bikas Kendra, Kalimpong” to honour the legendary artist’s contribution to the rich Gorkha folk tradition.
Addressing the gathering, Raju Bista highlighted the importance of the madal; a traditional drum; in the everyday lives and culture of the Gorkha community. He said that the madal is not just a musical instrument but a deep-rooted part of their identity. “From social events to religious gatherings, the madal is present everywhere in our community. Its beat connects with the heartbeat of our people,” Bista said.

Bista said that Kazi Singh ji did not just play the instrument, but elevated its value by presenting its classical elements to the modern generation and the wider world. “His efforts helped others see how rich, meaningful and original our folk music tradition is,” he added.
Kazi Singh was honoured by the Government of India with the Padma Shri award for his valuable work in the field of Indian folk music. Raju Bista said that this recognition is a matter of pride for the entire Gorkha community and a celebration of their cultural legacy.
During the event, several local folk artists came together to offer musical tributes to Kazi Singh ji. The program featured traditional dances, folk songs, and instrumental performances.
