Member of Parliament from Darjeeling and BJP National Spokesperson Raju Bista on Saturday chaired a high-level meeting with multiple agencies to review and strengthen infrastructure projects along the Teesta River, including National Highway 10 (NH-10), NHPC dams, and the Sevoke-Rangpo Rail Line.
The meeting brought together officials from NHIDCL, NHPC, and IRCON to discuss ongoing challenges and future plans. NHIDCL highlighted the measures they have taken since taking over NH-10, including swift responses to landslides, erosion, and land sinking near the Teesta. Emergency actions have been implemented, and work has begun on slope stabilization using wire duct lining technology. Officials confirmed that no further hill cutting is being carried out at Setijhora due to the area’s instability.
However, new risk zones have emerged between the 27th and 29th Mile, where overflowing muck and unstable land continue to pose a threat. NHIDCL has appointed a Project Management Consultant (PMC) tasked with developing a long-term, sustainable alignment for NH-10. Additionally, a Detailed Project Report (DPR) is underway for an alternative Sevoke-Melli highway to ensure safer and more reliable connectivity.
NHPC, facing scrutiny after the 2023 Teesta floods, outlined plans to strengthen riverbank protection and provide support to local communities. They are exploring housing options and have requested land allotment from the state for vulnerable populations. Bista urged NHPC to conduct a detailed survey of all areas along the Teesta prone to flooding or other risks.
The meeting also highlighted the need for better coordination among agencies. Major challenges on NH-10 include valley-side erosion, frequent landslides, and inter-agency delays. Bista stressed the importance of collaboration among NHIDCL, IRCON, NHPC, BRO, West Bengal PWD, and the Brahmaputra Board to create a comprehensive plan for the Teesta region.
“Restoring and securing NH-10 is essential for our people,” Bista said. “We will ensure reliable connectivity while keeping the needs of the communities first. I will continue to work closely with the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways and all stakeholders to make NH-10 a durable and high-standard road.”
