On the occasion of the 66th Foundation Day of the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), Defence Minister Rajnath Singh inaugurated 50 important infrastructure projects across six states and two union territories. The event took place at Ashoka Hall in the Manekshaw Centre, New Delhi, and was attended by several dignitaries, including Darjeeling MP and BJP National Spokesperson Raju Bista.
The Border Roads Organisation was founded on May 7, 1960. Since then, it has played a very important role in building roads, bridges, and other infrastructure in some of the toughest and most remote parts of India, especially near the borders. The main goal of BRO is to strengthen India’s security and to bring development to far-off areas in the north and northeast.
Among the newly completed projects, there are 17 roads, 30 bridges, and 3 other types of infrastructure works. These projects will not only make border areas more secure but will also help in improving transport and connectivity for local people. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh praised the BRO for their hard work and dedication, especially in tough terrain and weather conditions.
A key highlight of the event was the dedication of an 11.86-kilometre-long road from Khunia More to Kumani in West Bengal. This stretch is part of the bigger Chalsa–Jaldhaka–Bindu Barrage road project in the Dooars region. This road will benefit people living in areas like Chapramari, Naya Busty, Kumai Tea Garden, Kopish Fari Busty, and the Kumani region. It is expected to make travel much easier and also help local businesses and tourism grow.
Speaking at the ceremony, Rajnath Singh said that the BRO has built some of the world’s highest roads, tunnels, and airfields. He said that such work is very important for India’s defence, as it helps the armed forces move quickly when needed. He also said that the government, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is fully committed to developing border areas and making sure they are connected with the rest of the country.
Darjeeling MP Raju Bista, who was present at the event, said that the BRO’s work in connecting regions like Darjeeling hills, Terai, Dooars and Sikkim is highly appreciated. He thanked the BRO for helping improve the lives of people living in remote areas. “The roads built by BRO not only help our soldiers but also make everyday life easier for common people. They bring jobs, tourism, and better transport,” Bista said.
He also congratulated the past and present leadership of the BRO and all those involved in its projects. “Thanks to BRO, remote areas are no longer cut off from the rest of the country. They are now part of India’s progress story,” he added.
