In a solemn ceremony marking the 76th Republic Day, President Droupadi Murmu conferred the prestigious Shaurya Chakra upon Havildar Prakash Tamang of the 9th Gorkha Rifles, attached to the 32 Rashtriya Rifles, recognizing his extraordinary courage during a counter-terrorism operation in June 2024.
Despite suffering a gunshot wound to his right thigh, Havildar Tamang displayed remarkable bravery and determination by continuing the intense firefight. Demonstrating exceptional leadership under fire, he neutralized a terrorist at close range, a feat that has been widely lauded as a shining example of gallantry.
The award ceremony was part of a larger recognition event, where 93 gallantry honors were approved by President Murmu, including 14 Shaurya Chakras—three of which were awarded posthumously. Havildar Tamang’s award is not only a tribute to his personal valor but also a proud moment for the Gorkha community and the Indian Army as a whole.
